An Internet Phone Goes Where Pay Phones Take the Real Hits
The device provides internet
access and e-mail service at a cost of $1 for four minutes. It also
doubles as a traditional pay phone.
The
unit includes a screen, keyboard, and camera designed to be resistant
to weather and vandalism. The camera allows people to take pictures
of themselves and send them via e-mail.
As
a telephone, the unit allows users to call anywhere in the world
for $.25 cents a minute.
The
phone is scheduled to be installed Sunday on the corner of Fifth
Avenue and West 46th Street.
Its
owner, pay phone company TCC Teleplex, said after a 30-day trial
period it would install more of the phones in other locations.
